Hobbyweld
Hobbyweld products provide Volkswagen owners, restorers and workshop enthusiasts with a convenient, rent-free solution for welding and cutting gases. Popular with DIY welders, classic car restorers and fabrication workshops, Hobbyweld offers professional-quality gases without the ongoing cylinder rental costs associated with traditional gas suppliers.
About Hobbyweld Products
Hobbyweld was developed by Gas Direct Ltd, formerly Dixons of Westerhope, one of the UK's largest independent gas suppliers. After recognising that many hobbyists, restorers and occasional welders didn't want to pay ongoing cylinder rental charges, the company introduced its rent-free cylinder system, which was launched nationally in 2011.
Today, Hobbyweld is one of the UK's best-known suppliers of rent-free welding and cutting gases. The range includes MIG welding gas, TIG welding argon, oxygen, acetylene and other specialist gas mixtures designed for fabrication, restoration and repair work. Unlike traditional rental agreements, Hobbyweld cylinders operate on a deposit-and-refill system, allowing customers to pay for gas when they need it without ongoing rental charges.
Hobbyweld products have become a trusted choice among classic Volkswagen owners and restorers, offering reliable shielding gases for bodywork repairs, panel replacement and rust restoration. Popular with customers working on models such as the Beetle, T2 Split Screen, T2 Bay Window, T2 Brazilian Bay, T25 and other classic VWs, Hobbyweld helps deliver smooth, high-quality welds for everything from minor repairs and fabrication projects to full vehicle rebuilds.

Compatibility & Fitment Guidance
To ensure you choose the correct Hobbyweld product, we recommend checking:
- The type of welding process you're using (MIG, TIG or gas welding).
- The material being welded.
- Required gas type and gas mix.
- Cylinder size and expected usage.
- Equipment compatibility and regulator requirements.
Different welding applications require different gas mixtures. For example, MIG welding mild steel bodywork typically requires a shielding gas mix, while TIG welding aluminium generally requires pure argon. Always check your welder manufacturer's recommendations before purchasing.
How to Choose the Right Hobbyweld Gas
For most classic Volkswagen body repairs and restoration welding, a MIG shielding gas is often the preferred option. If you're carrying out precision fabrication work or welding aluminium components, TIG argon may be more suitable. Consider both the type of welding process and how frequently you'll use the cylinder when selecting the right product.
