What is an Electric Camper Cool Box?

The JK Campervan Cool Box is an electric cooler which uses your vehicle's 12v electricity to power its internal compressor to bring its internal temperature down to the level which you've set.

This means that our electric camper cool box, and othe electric coolboxes, works more like a regular refrigerator than a traditional cool box, as you can set them to the temperature you want and they'll use electrical power to maintain that temperature. This is a far cry from traditional coolboxes which need to be kept full of ice or cool packs to stay cold inside.

You'll generally find that these electric camper cool boxes have built-in battery protection, which helps to make sure that they don't drain your vehicle battery or leisure battery while they're operating.

The great news is that, because they're so well insulated, electric coolers like the JK Campervan Cool Box, will still work as a cool box even if they're not plugged in to 12v electricity, so you can pack ice around your food and drinks even if you're away from your campervan or motorhome.

Who is the JK Campervan Cool Box Designed For?

We've designed the JK Campervan Cool Box to suit a whole range of different campervans and motorhomes, from relatively compact VW T2s to the spacious interiors of modern camper conversions, and for quick trips to the beach to multi-week camping adventures. Here's a few of the ways our JK Camper Coolbox can be really helpful.

• Great in Classic Campers and Modern Camper Conversions

Because our JK Campervan Cool Box is compact and efficient, it can be stored easily inside your camper without taking up huge amounts of room, while also giving you plenty of space inside the coolbox to store your food and drinks while you're off on a camping adventure.

Space and battery power are always at a premium inside campervans, especially classics campers which tend to be much smaller, which is why we've designed the JK Campervan Cool Box to make the most of the space that it occupies and to make efficient use of the battery power that it draws.

• Ideal for Day Trips or Van Life Adventures

The spacious interior of the JK Campervan Cool Box gives you plenty of space to keep the essentials cool and fresh, while the high quality insulation means that you can get your cool box to your desired temperature and it will remain cold for a long time.

It's also compact and easy to transport, thanks to the handles and wheels, which means you can quickly and easily pack it into your camper, even if you're just going away for a day at the beach.

• Works in your camper, beach, festivals, and more

You can easily move your JK Campervan Cool Box from your camper, garage, or shed to load it up with food and drinks, and then pop it back in your camper, bring it out to the garden, or wheel it down to the park. The wheels are robust enough to handle uneven ground, gravel, and sand, without getting totally bogged down, which means you can tow your JK Campervan Cool Box with you anywhere.

JK Campervan Cool Box Electrical Information

This cool box is an electrical device, and uses 12v power to function.

It’s rated for 12 volts of DC electricity, and rated for a maximum power draw of 60 Watts.

You can use this information to help calculate the amount of power the JK Campervan Cool Box would use if you know the specifications of the rest of your camper’s electrical system and how it’s set up.

How Much Power Does the JK Campervan Cool Box Use?

It’s not easy to give an exact amount of energy consumption for an appliance like the JK Campervan Cool Box, as the amount of power that it uses will depend on a number of factors, including:

What target temperature you set the cool box to
The difference between the target temperature and the ambient temperature
Which level of battery protection you’ve selected
How often the cool box is opened
What’s stored inside the cool box

Let’s take a look at these factors and see how they can affect the JK Campervan Cool Box’s energy consumption.

How the target temperature can affect the cool box’s power consumption

The JK Campervan Cool Box works by using 12v electricity to keep its internal temperature to the one you’ve set using the control panel. It does this by using the built-in compressor unit, which works just like your fridge at home.

You can set the target temperature to between 20ºC and -20ºC, but the lower this target temperature is the more the energy the JK Campervan Cool Box will need to use to reach that temperature.

It will take a lot longer to cool the interior all the way down to -20ºC than it would to cool to 5ºC, for example, and this longer time means more energy needed to keep the compressor going.

Why more power can be used by the cool box on a warmer day

Another factor is the difference between the ambient temperature around the JK Campervan Cool Box and the target temperature you’ve set. This is similar to the above, as the compressor will need to run for longer to chill the interior of the cool box to 5ºC if it’s 28ºC in your campervan, compared to if it was 8ºC in your camper.

Again, this means that more power will be needed as the compressor will be running for longer.

How opening the cool box can use more power

The JK Campervan Cool Box is working to keep its internal temperature at the once you’ve set it to, and once it reaches that temperature it’ll switch off and stop drawing power.

But any time you open the lid to access your food and drinks you’ll be letting some of the cold air escape and allowing warmer air to mix in with it. This will raise the internal temperature of the JK Campervan Cool Box and likely cause the compressor to kick in again to bring the temperature back down, using more power.

This isn’t something which can be avoided, but it is something to keep in mind.

Ensuring the food and drinks inside are organised neatly and it’s easy to see and get to everything helps keep the time you need to have the lid open to a minimum, which will also reduce power consumption.

Why the food and drink you store in your cool box can affect power consumption

This one might seem obvious, but putting still-warm food or drinks in a cool box will raise the internal temperature and cause the compressor to kick in so that it can bring the temperature back down to the one you’ve set.

It’s always best to allow any food or drinks to cool down as much as possible before putting them in a cool box or fridge, to minimise the amount of power needed to get back to the target temperature.

Something people tend to think about less is the temperatures that different food and drink needs to be stored at. Always check the packaging or search for recommended storage temperatures, to make sure you’re storing your food and drink at the correct, safe temperatures to avoid issues like spoiling or food poisoning.

The effect of battery protection modes on power usage

This factor is less about the amount of power that the JK Campervan Cool Box is drawing from your vehicle battery, and instead about when the cool box will stop drawing power.

This battery protection system works by monitoring the voltage left in your battery, and switching the cool box off once that voltage falls below a certain threshold. It will also only start up again once your battery is recharged beyond a certain point.

There are three levels of battery protection you can select from: Low, Medium, and High (or L, M, and H).

Low – Cuts out at around 8.5v, and restarts again at around 10.9v,

Medium – Cuts out at around 10.1v, and restarts again at around 11.4v,

High – Cuts out at around 11.1v, and restarts again at around 12.4v.

Please Note: These voltage values are approximate, and the exact numbers may vary slightly in different situations.
