We’ve put together this quick guide to finding the chassis number on your classic VW camper, and what useful things you can do with that number.

We’re defining a classic VW camper as one built between 1955 to 1992 (so the Splitscreen, Bay, and T25) for this guide.

What Is a Chassis Number?

A chassis number or vehicle identification number (VIN) is a way of identifying your classic VW campervan’s production year and other core information about your vehicle's history.

All vehicles are given one of these numbers when they’re manufactured, to uniquely identify each vehicle.

Where Is the Chassis Number on a Classic VW Camper?

Depending on which classic Volkswagen camper you own, there may be varying locations where the chassis number is displayed.

VW T2 Split Screens 1955–1967:
If you own a VW T2 Split Screen there are multiple possible places you could find your chassis number.  You should find one on the right-hand side of the engine bay, on a metal plate.

If your T2 Split was built from October 1958 onwards, the VIN number will be on the bulkhead, behind the right-hand front seat, or if it was built from November 1963 onwards it’ll be fixed to the right-hand side of the fresh-air vent on the roof of the cab.

VW T2 Bay Windows 1967–1979:
On VW T2 Bay Windows, the chassis number can be found in similar places to the T2 Split, with possible locations including on the divider panel behind the passenger seat, or to the right of the engine. One difference between the Split and Bay buses is the chassis number may also be found on the dashboard.

VW T25s 1979–1992:
The VW T25 displays the chassis number in different locations to the other classic campers, such as on the Vin plate riveted to the A post, on the rear face of the offside front chassis outrigger or the chassis sticker above the pedals.

What Do You Need To Know This Number For?

Knowing your chassis number or VIN is important for several uses.
One of the main reasons that will affect you is when it comes to having work done on your camper or making modifications. The chassis number allows you to work out what parts, options, features, and modifications will best fit your vehicle. This number is also used to track its history, including sales, accidents, and repairs and insurance companies may use it to calculate insurance premiums.

If the worst comes to worst and your beloved VW camper gets stolen, the chassis number can be tracked and identified so it can hopefully be recovered. Although thieves often remove or alter the chassis number, there are often multiple hidden places where this number is displayed that they might not find.

When it comes to selling a classic vehicle, proving its authenticity can be a major factor in determining its value. The chassis number can be used to verify the authenticity so the buyer and the seller can reach a fair price.
