If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to upgrade the headlights on your VW Transporter, then you’re in the right place.
We love the modern VW Transporter, and several of us drive one as our daily driver, but the headlights on some models aren't great, especially in poor weather. Luckily, there's a simple upgrade available which will dramatically improve the performance of your headlamps!
Our resident mechanic, Mark B., has filmed a quick video in our on-site workshop at JK HQ to show you how to upgrade your VW T5 or T6 lights in no time at all.
The video walks you through how Mark replaced the bulbs on one of the VW T6.1s from the Just Kampers fleet, but the process is almost identical on a VW T5 or a VW T6.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Upgrading Your Headlight Bulbs
The first thing you’ll need to do is pop open your Transporter’s bonnet and prop it open. Then locate the wire clip which is securing the headlight bulb housing within the engine compartment, and release it.
You can now remove the cover (and stash it away somewhere safe that you’ll remember later), then reach inside the housing and release the dip beam bulb from the socket.
When fitting your new light bulb, make sure you don’t touch the glass section of the bulb with your fingers (unless you’re wearing gloves), as there’ll be natural greases on your fingers which may cause the bulb to fail prematurely.
From here it’s basically the same process in reverse – insert your new bulb into the socket, return the socket into the housing, and then pop the cover back on (obviously you left it somewhere safe, so you’ll be able to find it in no time!).
There are two feet on the bulb housing cover which you’ll need to insert into two gaps in the housing. Once that’s in place, you can put the clip back on and you’re done!

Here's the replacement H7 Xenon Headlight Bulb that Mark B. used:
About the bulbs (J42276):
Made by Ring, the H7 bulbs come as a pair, which is pretty handy!
Rated 12v and 55w, they'll give you up to 130% more efficacy when compared to standard bulbs.
As we showed in our video, they're a straight replacement for your existing VW T5 or VW T6 headlight bulbs, and will give you a crisp white light to make driving in the dark safer and easier, especially in the winter.
The bulbs don't require any modifications to wiring and are road and MOT legal, too!
