Here’s a quick guide to help you improve your campervan security and explore your options, so you can enjoy van life with peace of mind.

Whether you’re parked at home, at a campsite, or on the roadside, keeping your campervan safe and secure is crucial.

Your VW camper is more than just a vehicle; it’s your home on wheels (and usually a big investment). Unfortunately, with campervans being so valuable, they can be an ideal target for opportunistic thieves.

Read on for our top tips on keeping your camper and belongings safe, and discover how the right security measures could impact your vehicle insurance.

What external security measures should you consider?

Most thieves are on the lookout for an easy target. So, if you’ve got some visible security measures in place, there’s a good chance they’ll think twice about breaking in. Here are some external security features for your VW campervan that are worth considering.

Wheel Clamps & Steering Locks

Wheel clamps are commonly used to protect against vehicle theft. They’re big, bulky, and clearly visible, making it almost impossible to move your campervan without the key.

Steering locks work in a similar kind of way. Even if someone manages to start the engine, the steering wheel won’t turn, making it extremely difficult for them to drive away.

Both of these tools are effective deterrents. They’re tough to remove, and take a lot of time to deal with, which will make your campervan a less appealing target.

Door & Window Locks

Some of the older VW campervans have pretty basic window locks, which can make them more vulnerable to break-ins. Upgrading these original locks or installing additional deadlocks or slam locks can significantly improve the security of your camper, and make it more difficult for intruders to get in. You could also consider security film for an extra layer of protection.

Thermomats - An Unexpected Deterrent

While thermomats are typically used for insulation and privacy, they can also serve as a simple security upgrade. By blocking the view into your VW campervan, they make it harder for anyone snooping around to see what’s inside, or even if anyone’s home. If you can keep your camper private and comfortable, while also making it less of a target, it’s definitely worth considering.

Alarm Stickers

Even if you don’t have an alarm system installed (though we definitely recommend it), simply placing some security stickers on your campervan can be a surprisingly effective deterrent. These visual warnings can be enough to stop someone from breaking in, as they won’t want to risk triggering an alarm or drawing unwanted attention.

Safe T Pedal Locks

Much like a wheel clamp or steering lock, a heavy-duty Safe T Pedal Lock adds an extra layer of physical security, which is visible from outside the camper. It’s quick and easy to fit, and blocks access to all pedals, making it virtually impossible to drive the vehicle away.

How can I keep my campervan safe inside?

Now that we’ve covered the external defences, let’s think about the security inside your campervan. If someone does manage to break in, having some effective internal security features can still make a big difference.

GPS Trackers

Installing a reliable GPS tracker can be a real game-changer in the unfortunate event that your campervan is stolen. These devices can share real-time location updates and send alerts straight to your phone, allowing you to act quickly, and in most cases, get the vehicle back promptly.

Alarms & Immobilisers

Installing a proper alarm and immobiliser system can seriously improve your campervan’s security and might even save you money on your insurance. These systems will alert you and others nearby if someone tries to break in, start, or move your camper without the right key or fob, and stop the engine from starting, which is often enough make thieves abandon their attempt altogether.

Where should you park for maximum security?

At Home

Try to park your campervan off the road whenever you can; ideally behind a locked gate or on a driveway with motion-sensor lights or CCTV. This will make it less tempting for opportunists passing by.

When Travelling

When you’re on the road, try to park in well-lit, busy areas whenever you can. If possible, avoid leaving your campervan unattended in quiet or isolated places for long periods of time. If you’re staying at a campsite, it’s a good idea to park near other campers or within view of staff areas, to minimise the risk of theft or damage.

Events

At big events like festivals or shows, there are loads of vehicles in one place. Even with crowds nearby, these kinds of gatherings can be prime spots for opportunistic thieves looking for an easy target. If you’re attending an event like this, try parking in a very visible area, and consider fitting a temporary wheel clamp or steering lock and make sure you don’t leave any valuables inside.

How can security upgrades affect your vehicle insurance?

Security upgrades don’t just protect your camper – they could also save you money on insurance.

Insurers set their prices based on risk, so if your camper looks like an easy target for theft or damage, you’re likely to pay more for your policy. Most campervans are packed with valuables like electronic devices and personal belongings, making them a higher risk for insurers by default. But if you take extra precautions to keep your camper safe and secure, it suddenly seems a lot less risky, which might mean a lower premium.

While even one security feature can help, combining a few of them (like a tracker, alarm, and upgraded locks) is the best way to maximise security and give you the best chance at a discount.

Just make sure you tell your provider about any features you’ve added.

Conclusion

By actively taking steps to improve your campervan’s security, you can prevent theft, increase your chances of getting it back if something does happen, and maybe even save money on your insurance.

From visible deterrents like wheel clamps and steering locks, to hidden trackers and clever parking strategies, every little thing helps. With a campervan that’s protected, you can hit the road with peace of mind, knowing you’ve done everything you can to keep it safe.
