What Is the EMPI Super Shroud and How Does It Work?
Keep your air-cooled VW running cool. We take a closer look at the EMPI Super Shroud and how it improves airflow and engine cooling.
What is the EMPI Super Shroud?
The EMPI Super Shroud takes the familiar classic VW fan shroud design and combines it with a redesigned internal airflow system.
EMPI developed the shroud using CAD modelling, 3D scanning, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and physical airflow testing. The internal fins and air passages have been designed to increase airflow while providing a more balanced distribution of cooling air across the engine.
The shroud also retains the classic 36hp-style appearance, making it a useful option for owners who want improved cooling without dramatically changing the look of their engine bay.
Improved Airflow and Engine Cooling
Unlike a basic aftermarket fan shroud, the Super Shroud has been designed specifically around the way cooling air moves through an air-cooled VW engine.
Depending on the version and fan configuration, features include:
- Redesigned internal fins to improve airflow distribution
- Improved airflow across both sides of the engine
- Increased cooling-air capacity
- Improved fit around the engine case and surrounding tinware
- Compatibility with standard 28–30mm fans and wider 37mm fans
- Classic 36hp-style appearance
- Cleaner alternator or generator mounting arrangement
The result is a fan shroud designed to make better use of the air produced by the engine cooling fan.
Choosing the Right Setup
The EMPI Super Shroud is available in different configurations, so it's important to select the correct version for your engine and cooling system.
Your choice of cooling fan can also make a significant difference. The Super Shroud can accommodate both standard-width 28–30mm fans and wider 37mm fans, allowing the cooling system to be configured around the requirements of your engine.
As with any air-cooled VW cooling system, the fan shroud is only one part of the setup. Correctly fitted engine tinware, seals and other cooling components are essential for directing air through the engine effectively.
