What is a Campervan Cool Box?
We offer cool boxes which are designed to work brilliantly with all sorts of campers, motorhomes, and other vehicles, in ways that other cool boxes might not.
The team here at Just Kampers has decades of collective knowledge and experience with all sorts of different camping adventures, from a quick overnight in a VW T2 Bay, through to spending months driving around Europe in a Mercedes Sprinter. The one thing all of these trips had in common was the need for easy access to fresh, chilled food and drinks.
That’s why we’ve created our own JK Cool Box, which is powered by your camper’s 12v electricity and has a pair of sturdy wheels and a long pull handle, so you can stow it away in your camper or bring it along to the beach!
It’s designed to fit neatly into a range of campervan interiors, and have a low power draw with built-in battery protection, so it won’t drain your leisure battery while it keeps your food and drink chilled.
What’s the Difference Between a Compressor Cool Box and a Standard Cool Box?
A ‘normal’ standard cool box is usually an insulated box which you can put your food and drinks in along with ice or cool packs or a similar way of getting the inner storage space cold and keeping it cold. This type of cool box is really effective, but the interior will warm up every time the lid is opened as warmer air gets in, so they’re usually best for day trips or overnight journeys.
Compressor cool boxes are similar, but they’ve got an electrical system which includes a battery and a compressor, powered by 12v or 240v electricity. This compressor system allows the cool box to reach a set temperature without you needing to pack the space with ice, and ensures that the cool box can maintain that temperature.
In this way, a compressor cool box works a lot like a fridge, but they’re generally a lot more portable than a refrigerator.
Both of these options work well, but a lot of people are investing in portable compressor cool boxes for their campervans, so they don’t need to keep filling their coolers with ice and have better control over what temperatures their food and drink are kept at.
What Are the Best Options for Campervan Refrigeration?
There’s no one answer for the best type of fridge or cooler for your campervan, as there are a lot of different factors which can influence your decision.
We generally recommend a more traditional campervan fridge like the JKR50 if you’ve got the space in your campervan interior, and know that you’ll be spending time in and around your camper. This means that the fridge’s lack of portability won’t be an issue, since you can just pop back into your vehicle to grab food and drink as needed.
There are a few different options for campervan fridges and fridge-freezers, including different options for how the doors open, which can all suit different camper interiors and uses. You can read more about this in our blog JK's Guide to the Best Fridges for Your Campervan.
If you don’t have the space for a dedicated area to install a fridge, or you want the flexibility of being able to take it with you to the beach, or moving it to where a friend is parked up, or just want to be able to also use it in your garden at home, then a portable electric cool box could be a great solution.
You can move it around in your camper’s interior to allow space for everything else you’re packing, while also being free to move it into your garden or even use it at home when you need extra fridge or freezer space, like for BBQs or at Christmas!
When it comes to cool boxes, you’ve got the option to go with a more traditional cooler which requires no electricity and is kept cold by filling it with ice or cool packs, or you can go with an electric cool box which uses 12v electricity and a compressor to maintain a low temperature, like a fridge would.
Some campervan owners even opt for both, wiring a fridge into their campervan interior and then also bringing a portable cool box if they want or need the extra capacity.
